"You can always count on people to not have the courage to say anything."

Whew. I finally finished this one. I'm not super impressed. Interweaving the screenplay with the faux-audiobook makes the pacing too slow, and it's difficult to get any sense of tension or momentum, except a little at the end. The imagery is cool, as is the exploration of guilt and hidden objectives, but I'm mostly just glad to be done.

It's a two cats, one book afternoon. I was going to do Dewey's, but I couldn't carve out enough time, and I'm postponing celebrating Indie Bookstore Day and the San Diego Book Crawl until Monday when my elder kid can shop hop with me. (Also, am I ever going to finish the tagged book? I'm on the verge of looking up spoilers and calling it a day.)

Reggie I‘ve read to pg 50 on this book and was like mehhh. His last two books: snoozefests. And I love him but I don‘t know if I could take a 3rd if he has another one coming out this year. 2d
ImperfectCJ @Reggie This is my third of his, and given my experience, I'm not sure anything new from him will jump to the top of my TBR. 2d

I don't have the audiobook of this, so Camille's reading it aloud to me. There's more meowing and purring than I would have expected, so it's possible she's also translating it on the fly.

(I got, like, 3 productive things done this afternoon and now I feel invincible...and a little punchy.)(Do other people say "punchy" to mean "silly, laughing at everything", or is it regional/familial? I just want to make sure no one thinks it's like "stabby.")

TheBookgeekFrau My family used to say "punch drunk" so I immediately knew what you meant ? 5d
Reggie Lolol I love this. I can just hear her meowing and purring the words. Lol 5d
Ruthiella I say punchy! 5d

Bette Yep, punchy, too tired and you get silly. 😜 I‘d listen to more books if cats were involved. 🤭 4d

1.5⭐

• horror • cursed film • mixed media • past & present timelines • multiple POVs •

•This is one of those books that either works for you or doesn‘t. It‘s obvious where I fall on this spectrum. I was completely adrift; for me, the writing was too disjointed, the narration too oddly done, and overall, it felt like there wasn‘t really a story here. Was it scary? I have no f-ing clue.

I arrived at my choice for #weirdwords after quite the rabbit hole: first reading a mention of an on-set fatality during the shooting of the Twilight Zone movie led to the morbid Wikipedia page which somehow led me to medieval torture methods which led to Latin phrase Poena cullei (Penalty of the sack). As wikipedia states, “The punishment consisted of being sewn up in a leather sack, with an assortment of live animals including a dog, snake...“

vivastory monkey, and a chicken or rooster, and then being thrown into water.“

Started this one yesterday and I'm not sure how I feel about it yet. I'm a big fan of slasher flicks so to read a book which is basically a slasher flick sounded right up my alley. Gonna give it a few more chapters then I may have to dnf it

Blueberry I enjoyed How to Survive a Horror Movie by Seth Graham-Smith. 2mo

I‘ve only thumbed through it so far. The concept appeals to me. It has plenty of psychological thrillers such as Hard Candy and The Piano Teacher. Films I wouldn‘t classify as horror. Which I usually prefer. Hopefully plenty of Isabelle Adjani.

Pickpick

I love horror movies, I always have. I‘ll choose the horror genre over others every time. This book was a new perspective, a Black lens I needed to look through. This book goes deeper than what we all know: the Black character dies first, or is sacrificed in other ways—not necessarily a physical death. Cinema still has a long way to go, and we must continue to demand it do better. This looks like inclusion, representation, ending racist⬇️

JenniferEgnor storylines, stigma. Reading the books ‘How To Be Antiracist‘ and ‘White Supremacy and Me‘ changed my life, and I‘ve never looked at anything around me the same since then. I‘m glad I read this book. Recommended. 3mo
