Welcome to Orphancorp | Marlee Jane Ward
2 posts | 4 read | 1 reading | 1 to read
Winner of the 2015 Seizure Viva La Novella Prize ‘Takes all of your dystopian nightmares and connects them to a mother lode of pure emotional intensity. There’s so much keen detail here about the cruel logic of oppressive institutions, you’ll feel Mirii’s yearning for freedom in your bones – and you’ll rejoice at every tiny moment of escape that she achieves. Welcome to Orphancorp is harrowing, scarily real, and ultimately super moving.’ – Charlie Jane Anders (i09) ‘Punchy, crunchy, sexy and smart, Welcome to Orphancorp is a short, sharp shock of a story with bruised-but-not-broken characters and a bonsai dystopia you can actually believe in. Marlee Jane Ward is a writer of heart and passion, muscle and slow-burning anger.’ – Ian McDonald ‘Welcome to Orphancorp is an intimate, heartfelt story set in the darkest of places. I can’t stop thinking about these characters.’ – Kij Johnson ‘An object lesson in how to dehumanise young people by locking them up and depriving them of all warmth and care – has never been more timely. This gritty, greasy story is peppered with violence and lit with the slenderest shafts of affection and hope. It will make your jaw clench with fear for the indomitable Mirii Mahoney, and your fist punch the air at her every tiny victory.’ – Margo Lanagan

Welcome to Orphancorp | Marlee Jane Ward

Actual conversation between me and my daughter this morning:

Me: Where's that book?
D: Which book? Have you seen this house? We have lots of books.
Me: ... Fair point.

(Tagging this book as an author I follow on Twitter recommended this author this morning and it sounds pretty amazing.)

(New hashtag suggestion #smartarsekidsoflitsy ?)

saresmoore I like this hashtag a lot. 8y
Laalaleighh I thought maybe you were fed up with your daughter and threatening to send her to an orphanage. ? My parents used to watch Oliver and company with me and when we got to the please sir can I have some more part they would look at me and be like "be an awful shame if you ended up begging for more gruel in an orphanage one day because you couldn't control your smart mouth" They would also give me knowing looks during the orphanage scenes in Annie. (edited) 8y
Sue @saresmoore Woot! @Laalaleighh 😂😂😂That's hilarious. Fortunately I just have to threaten my daughter with her father's house - she has a lot more rules to follow there! 8y
Laalaleighh @sue 😂that sounds much less psychologically damaging than playing musicals about orphans and staring at them meaningfully. 8y
Laalaleighh I still get all quiet and subdued whenever I hear "hard knock life" come on ?? 8y
