David Vann's writes some more about the themes he explored in “Legend of A Suicide“: Alaska, dentists cheating on their partners, men wanting to live a wilderness life without the necessary practical skills, parental suicide. I like his style but I will look at some later books to see if he's got these themes out of his system yet.

A ilha Caribou/ Caribou island. I spent all my reading wanting to slap all the characters' faces cause I could see where this would end and it did. It is really an afflictive tormenting story.(Booklist) What I love the most about the book was Alaska as one character and how the story made me feel (I got really angry with them) Good book, well written. #book #bookaholic #Sha2018

This might in fact be a bit of a masterpiece. It's a really hostile novel, set in a painfully beautiful but ultimately hostile environment. Alaska is a place of crushing solitude, peopled by ultimately miserable people who seem intent on inflicting their misery on each other. It's a novel about the weight of dreams deferred, and the ease with which we blame each other for this. In spite of this, it really is a beautifully written, stark novel.

This book is more poetically written than I'd expected...in a good way.

... you can choose who you‘ll be with, but you can‘t choose who they‘ll become.

abhisynthe Haha. Although, I bet there's a whole bunch of writers who would never apologize for who they became either. 9y

Alaska's beauty has a brutal edge. From a distance it appears calm and pristine, but the reality can be harsh, unyielding. Chaos is part of its nature, a reflection of the chaos in the couple's marriage, their lives, while at the same time adding to their chaos. A perfect storm gaining momentum.

acorter Glad to find someone else on here who has read Vann! There are a few reviews for Aquarium, but that's it. Did you read Legend of a Suicide? I just finished it and it reminded me heavily of Caribou Island. 9y
