Batman: Gotham Knights - Gilded City
Batman: Gotham Knights - Gilded City | Evan Narcisse
4 posts | 1 read
Batman: Gotham Knights - Gilded City is an incredible collection that serves as a thrilling prequel to the Gotham Knights game, written by Evan Narcisse and illustrated by Abel! A mysterious virus has infected Gotham City--turning its victims into rabid, yellow-irised maniacs driven to looting, theft, and bursts of anger. Batman and his Gotham Knights struggle to keep this strange virus contained while investigating its origins. But this is not the first time this unusual illness has overtaken the city. Take a trip to Gotham in the mid-1800s and meet the city's first masked vigilante--the mysterious hero known only as the Runaway--as they, too, find themselves mired in the mystery of this infection! This thrilling and horrific tale, split between modern-day Gotham and the Gotham of 1847, leads directly into the upcoming video game Gotham Knights!

Pickpick

The ending felt a little rushed, but that makes sense as it's set up as a prequel. Considering it's supposed to be background for a video game, it's a pretty rich text: dual timeline, investigating ghoulish mysteries in both: commenting on consumerism and social media fueled hype in the modern era, having a bunch of Batfam moments, 1/?

Robotswithpersonality 2/? especially surrounding fraught father-and-son dynamics between Nightwing and Batman and Red Hood and Batman; commenting on slavery, the appalling conditions for factory workers and tenement housing in the early urban industrial era in the historical setting. 1mo
Robotswithpersonality 3/? And hey, here's to a queer, black woman activists and vigilante heroes who are depicted in a loving relationship!
This run also introduced me to a new baddie in the person of Vandal Savage, which, having encountered him after the BRZRKR series, felt kinda familiar...

Robotswithpersonality 4/4 Adored the art. Did find myself jarred by wooden dialogue/explainer/exposition segues a few times. I think the writer wanted the story to be clear and sincere in its multi-faceted action and messaging, and maybe went a little overboard toward that goal. 🤷🏼‍♂️
⚠️violence, racism
