In the Woods
In the Woods | David Elliott
15 posts | 5 read
A New York Times best-selling author shares his love for woodland animals in a revealing, beautifully illustrated collection of verse for poetry lovers and budding naturalists. The animals in the dark woods are secretive, their inner lives a mystery. The stealthy bobcat, the inquisitive raccoon, and the dignified bear waking up from his winter nap are just a few of the glorious animals featured in this clever collection of poems and woodland scenes. This companion to In the Sea, In the Wild, and On the Farm is the first collaboration between David Elliott and Rob Dunlavey, whose colorful, expressive art pairs with the author's charming poems to create a love letter to the animals of the forest.

Give the skunk a lot of room, unless you care for strong perfume.

This is a great book to have around the classroom for students to read during silent reading time or as a choice for a read aloud. These poems are both informative and fun, so elementary students of any age would gain from being exposed to this collection.

Pickpick

In this collection of poems, David Elliot tells his readers about all the different animals you may find in the woods. With some poems digging into the subject and others providing shorter and sillier poems, there is something for everyone in this collection.

I would use this book in my classroom to show students how poetry can reflect the way something is presented or acts. For example, there is a large space in the text after a deer hears a branch snap, this represents the deer being spooked and running away. Students could use this formula of writing poems into their own life to represent how they feel.

This book consists of poems written for each animal that represent and describe what each animal does in the woods. Some of the poems use rhyming sounds and a rhythm to portray the nature of the animal. Every poem contains imagery to describe how the five senses are used by the animals.

This collection of poems is silly, informative, and sweet and simple. It has great artwork that students would love and poems that they could use within projects on different animals and tie reading/poems into a science/bio lesson. This would be great for all grade levels, even having the teacher read them aloud to kindergarteners to learn about animals through a different media.

This is a collection of nature themed poems focusing around the different animals that live in the wood, from “The Opossum“ to “The Bear.“ Some of the poems are more in depth and complex, but I found myself enjoying the shorter sillier ones. “The Skunk“ is only 14 words and just mentioned how you should give it room unless you care for “strong perfume.“
