Like the author‘s debut novel - Girl A - this cannot be described as a pleasant, easy read, but it is compelling. A school shooting in the Lake District leads to “truthers” and conspiracy theorists questioning whether it ever really happened. Sadness abounds, secrets slowly emerge. This isn‘t easy reading, but it is timely/zeitgeisty and is page-turningly, can‘t-look-away good.

This mystery based around a school shooting in Britain was another okay one for me. I kept putting it down for more interesting books, but I liked the incorporation of conspiracy theorists.

A man shoots up a school play killing many elementary students and a popular teacher. A young man follows a wannabe politician down a conspiracy rabbit hole while the teacher‘s daughter grieves and keeps secrets of her own.

AmyG It‘s never a good thing when you put a book down to read something else. 🤣 7mo

Clearly this is a tough subject to read about (a primary school shooting) but it‘s more about the aftermath than the event itself.

Was Marty actually in the hall at the time - was she running to escape or was she running towards the school? And what effect will all the truthers and conspiracy theorists have on the village?

It‘s a very similar style to Girl A - quite steady with a slow reveal rather than twisty-turny edge of your seat stuff.

BarbaraBB It sounds good. Is it YA? 8mo
JillR I‘m really looking forward to this. Shall wait years for the paperback in my usual stubborn fashion though 8mo
batsy Nice review! I liked Girl A a lot—didn't quite expect it to be an emotional punch in the gut—so I've got this on my list. 8mo

squirrelbrain It‘s not quite as dark as Girl A I don‘t think @jlhammar @batsy which is a weird thing to say about a book about a school shooting. (edited) 8mo
squirrelbrain Mine was an ARC @JillR - I‘ve enjoyed both her books, but wouldn‘t pay for a hardback. 8mo
squirrelbrain Definitely not YA @BarbaraBB , although not as disturbing as her first book 8mo
squirrelbrain I get what you mean @tpixie - always trying to find different words to describe ‘good‘ books that are tough to read. It also feels wrong to say you enjoyed such a book. 8mo
BarbaraBB I haven‘t read Girl A either. Should I read that first? 8mo
squirrelbrain @BarbaraBB - no, no need to read Girl A first - they‘re both stand-alone books. I think I liked Day One slightly better. 8mo

This is the first book I have read by Abigail dean and will certainly look out for her next book.

It starts with a school shooting and slowly over the course of the book the events of the day and also the events after unfold.

The characters come to life through the pages with little details added throughout the book which add depth.

Really good read about a town sone characters within the town and what happened on and after day one
