More book festival prep — West-African middle grade fantasy. I dig a reluctant hero, especially a young one. While recognizing the audiobook narrator‘s storytelling skill, I did not enjoy the voicing of our MC here. She kinda got the Hermione treatment.

On sale in July, Clark‘s debut for young readers is likely to be a hit with kids who like complex, intriguing worlds & darker stories. The day after all the children in her village hear a strange, alluring song in the middle of the night, on the very day she is to turn 12, Abeni watches as her quiet village is attacked & then everyone taken. Except her. She escapes with the help of an old woman who introduces Abeni to a world of spirits & magic.

First day of C2E2 (Chicago‘s big comic/ entertainment con) today and it wasn‘t ALL about comics. I managed to snag a couple of interesting looking ARCs. The tagged book is Clark‘s middle grade debut and the second is a YA fantasy with an attention grabbing title. I wonder what I might be able to find tomorrow?!?
