They are undoubtedly created from many elements of life, but none of them exist in their entirety in life as I have it. Also certain elements of both the appearance of the city and its way of life have passed in my descriptions of the Macedonian city. In "The Iron Lamp", for example, there is talk of two markets - the at-market and the grain market. There were two such markets in Prilep. There is also talk about a watch. And in Prilep we had an old clock, a masterpiece of our making. In Prilep, I naturally had the opportunity to gather, at most, elements from direct observations. But at the same time, I must emphasize that when I created in my novels the life of a Macedonian city like Prespa, I sought to represent the average Macedonian city, I sought the commonality characteristic of that city. That's why I tried to use the one from Prilep, which is common, if not to all, at least to more cities. ” - Dimitar Talev
