The Gospel of Wellness
The Gospel of Wellness: Gyms, Gurus, Goop and the False Promise of Self-Care | Rina Raphael
5 posts | 7 read | 13 to read
'Next level revelatory' Sarah Knight, internationally-bestselling author of The Life-Changing Magic of Not Giving a F*ck What happens when the cure becomes as bad as the disease? Women are pursuing their health like never before. Whether it's juicing, biohacking, clutching crystals, or sipping collagen, today there is something for everyone, as the wellness industry has grown from modest roots into a $4.4 trillion movement, promising health and vitality in the most fashionable package. So why are we suddenly all feeling so unwell? Vividly told and deeply reported, The Gospel of Wellness reveals how this obsession is a direct result of gender inequalities and structural sexism within medicine and society. And while wellness may have sprung from good intentions, we are now relentlessly bombarded with exploitative offerings, questionable ideas, and a mounting pressure to maintain an illusion of control. Balancing the good with the bad, wellness industry journalist Rina Raphael offers a clear-eyed exploration of what wellness can actually offer us, knocking down the false idols that have taken hold and ultimately showing how we might shape a better future for the movement - and for our well-being.

I thought this was great! Really dissected the wellness culture/trends and while I usually consider myself pretty good at not falling for the hype, a few things I‘d had my eyes opened to. Definitely makes you side eye some of the wellness fads more and question if you really need it/they‘re right for you

This was an interesting read that dives into the almost religious fervor around wellness these days. I appreciated the push back against the pseudoscience of our obsession with chemicals in skincare products as well as organic food and what that really means and doesn't. But it covers so much ground it's hard to follow and I found a lot of the discussions around dieting and sugar and food quite triggering as someone who's had an ED.

When you‘re constantly bombarded with information about health and wellness on the internet or social media, it can be hard to separate science from being sold to. Raphael goes down the line of various categories of wellness from supplements to exercise and brings a healthy dose of skepticism to fads, brands, and influencers. While I didn‘t always agree with her, this was an interesting #audiobook!

Cinfhen Does sound interesting but…. do we need a book ?? 2y
Megabooks @Cinfhen yes!! Look around fitness/wellness Instagram and there is A LOT of bs, and even I, with a scientific background, get caught up in misinformation. It‘s just so easy to get caught up in pseudoscience or the unhealthy side of wellness, ⬇️ (edited) 2y
Megabooks For example, I was really worried after watching the hbo documentary about talc makeup products and cancer, and while I‘m sure there are cancer cases tied to residual asbestos in makeup, my eyebrow pencil probably isn‘t going to kill me. (And tbh the doc did really concern me.) But it is so good to get multiple perspectives AND look at the financial incentives each party has for saying what they do. @Cinfhen (edited) 2y

Centique I will have to read this. I‘ve probably said it before but the BS gets me pretty cross. Totally here for the positive effects of genuine stuff - eat your veges etc etc - but yeah, the frightening theories ppl advised me about when I had cancer, (talc powder, bra wire, deodorant, bbqd food etc) all of which I double checked with my specialists, and they were all just scaremongering. 2y
Centique I got told about makeup causing cancer - the woman said to me everything you put on your skin will enter your blood stream within 5 minutes. My specialist said “when you have a bath do your veins fill up with water?” 😂😂 2y
Cinfhen You make a good case❣️ There is TONS of BS around the wellness industry #ExcellentPoint 2y

4/5

I think anyone who enjoyed the section in Cultish on cult fitness, is going to love this deep dive into the wellness industry and the ways it has come to take over some the space religion traditionally held. From fitness to crystals, the book talks about how the Wellness industry has become what it is both the good and the bad.

Trigger warning for discussions of eating disorders.
