My first Joyce Carol Oates, and this was scary. I actually had to stop reading towards the end.

Pickpick

A woman is walking down a hotel corridor. How did she end up there? As we learn that, we also have Babysitter lurking in the background. A serial killer operating in Detroit in 1976/ 77 who killed children. Are these things connected?

I‘m easily scared, but it‘s been a long time since I‘ve been this scared while reading. The mixture of not wanting to find out what happens but at the same time you need to keep on reading.

Suet624 Yikes! 13mo
Deblovestoread That definitely sounds like a freezer book to me. 😬 13mo
BarbaraBB This sounds so scary. And intriguing! 13mo
AnneCecilie @Suet624 @Deblovestoread @BarbaraBB I was scared, but I think the female perspective added to the scariness of everything. 13mo

Mehso-so

I read two books set in the 70‘s, each about a serial killer within days of each other. A young wife and mother finds herself restless in her marriage and disheartened with motherhood. She embarks on an affair with a mysterious and dangerous man who may be connected to a serial killer prowling her city. I thought the writing was ok and the pacing was a bit slow but the ending was disappointing 😬 between a pick and so-so

BarbaraBB I am always so-so about Oates. 1y
Cinfhen Yeah, this is my second book by her and I‘m not overly enthusiastic @BarbaraBB 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y
marleed My only book by this author was the tagged which I liked - until and unfortunately I heard her interview about the book. I was so unimpressed, nearly horrified, by her justification of the actions of the farther. It completely destroyed my thoughts about the book and can‘t revisit the author. 1y

Cinfhen I think she intentionally tries to be edgy or provocative @marleed im not sure if I‘d read more from her 🤷🏼‍♀️ 1y
SamAnne I‘ve only read one of her books, Book of American Martyrs. Was not impressed. She can‘t write Middle America, that‘s for sure. 1y
Megabooks I‘ve never read her. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 1y
Cinfhen I don‘t think you‘re missing anything @Megabooks 1y

The ominous foreshadowing, frightening killer(s), language, and (fascinating) use of parentheses make this brilliant thriller unique. I do have to admit that Hannah, the housewife whose husband takes her for granted, grates on my nerves a bit. Now that there are more chapters narrated by Mikey & others, I am enjoying it even more. #amreading #serialkillers #thriller
