Beautifully written, slow but very atmospheric.
I loved this book, set in two different timelines Egypt 1942 and England 1974. It's about James meeting Yvette an Egyptian women they marry and eventually move to the UK. Then about how James is still grieving about Yvette who died ten years earlier. It has romance, secrets, family relationships.
This is not your typical WWII historical fiction novel. While it does cover some of the war experiences of the main characters, it is mostly set in 1974 and 1964 (though the journals of one of the characters). Instead it is a story of grief, love, a crisis of faith, and the long lasting effects of the war. It's rural British setting was definitely part of its charm. I loved the characters and really enjoyed it. 4.5/5 stars
