Fortunes of Jaded Women
Fortunes of Jaded Women | Carolyn Huynh

For fans of Jonathan Tropper, KJ Dell'Antonia, and Kevin Kwan, this "sharp, smart, and gloriously extra" (Nancy Jooyoun Kim, The Last Story of Mina Lee) debut follows a family of estranged Vietnamese women--cursed to never know love or happiness--as they reunite when a psychic makes a startling prediction. Everyone in Orange County's Little Saigon knew that the Duong sisters were cursed. It started with their ancestor Oanh who dared to leave her marriage for true love--so a fearsome Vietnamese witch cursed Oanh and her descendants so that they would never find love or happiness, and the Duong women would give birth to daughters, never sons.? Oanh's current descendant Mai Nguyen knows this curse well. She's divorced, and after an explosive disagreement a decade ago, she's estranged from her younger sisters, Minh Pham (the middle and the mediator) and Khuyen Lam (the youngest who swears she just runs humble coffee shops and nail salons, not Little Saigon's underground). Though Mai's three adult daughters, Priscilla, Thuy, and Thao, are successful in their careers (one of them is John Cho's dermatologist!), the same can't be said for their love life. Mai is convinced they might drive her to an early grave. Desperate for guidance, she consults Auntie Hua, her trusted psychic in Hawaii, who delivers an unexpected prediction: this year, her family will witness a marriage, a funeral, and the birth of a son. This prophecy will reunite estranged mothers, daughters, aunts, and cousins--for better or for worse. A multi-narrative novel brimming with levity and candor, The Fortunes of Jaded Women is about mourning, meddling, celebrating, and healing together as a family. It shows how Vietnamese women emerge victorious, even if the world is against them.

Troi oi, this book is fun! Simultaneously light-hearted and heartfelt, it‘s a joyful celebration of Vietnamese American culture, dynamic women, and messy families. Huynh expertly weaves each woman‘s story into a beautiful intergenerational tapestry full of chaos, healing, and love. #AuthenticBooks

⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ ⭐️ This book is about a generation of Vietnamese women whose lives have long been shaped by a “curse” - the arbitrary rules that can bind women into roles not of their own making. Fortunately, once women recognize their own agency their story can be one of redemption. If you‘re looking for a book to move your soul, pick this one up. I smirked, laughed, and cried my way through it. A bonus: I learned a lot about Vietnamese culture.

After finishing Other Birds, I started reading the tagged book last night around the campfire. It is so good! I‘m almost done with it because it hooked me. I hope to finish it on our four hour drive back home.

This was a humorous book about mothers and daughters, in particular the Vietnamese American culture, but the troubles and emotions the women faced are somewhat universal. The relationships are messy and the romances are complicated, but the women are bright and opinionated and fun. My only complaint is that there are a lot of characters to keep track of...a problem I solved with a cheat sheet. I gave it 3.75/5 stars.

A Vietnamese family cursed to have only daughters who will then be unlucky in love, but generations later hope finally comes from a fortune teller. At first none of Duong women seem in the place to find happiness or even define what happiness would look like for themselves. Funny and smart, I wanted to throttle the characters but just as often wanted to hug them tight, although I would likely be hit by an orange if I even tried either. Out 9/6
