#marchintoreading Day15: #shepersisted
In 1994, Dr. Alvord became the 1st Navajo woman surgeon. From her memoir: "The first strand of my story shows that anything is possible. The words 'Navajo' and 'surgeon' are not often seen together. But a minority women can travel across cultural, class, and educational borders and become a part of a medical world whose doors have been closed to minority people for most of its existence."

Pickpick

I love what Dr. Alvord has to say about native medical knowledge and its relevance to biomedicine. Humility goes a long way in making medicine pertinent and effective for patients.
