Spock's World
Spock's World | Diane Duane
6 posts | 12 read | 11 to read
It is the twenty-third century. On the planet Vulcan, a crisis of unprecedented proportion has caused the convocation of the planet's ruling council -- and summoned the U.S.S. Enterprise from halfway across the galaxy, to bring Vulcan's most famous son home in its hour of need. As Commander Spock, his father Sarek, and Captain James T. Kirk struggle to preserve Vulcan's future, the planet's innermost secrets are laid before us, from its beginnings millions of years ago to its savage prehistory, from merciless tribal warfare to medieval court intrigue, from the exploration of space to the the development of o'thia -- the ruling ethic of logic. And Spock -- torn between his duty to Starfleet and the unbreakable ties that bind him to Vulcan -- must find a way to reconcile both his own inner conflict and the external dilemma his planet faces...lest the Federation itself be ripped asunder. Diane Duane, author of three previous bestselling STAR TREK novels and an episode of the new STAR TREK NEXT GENERATION television series, as well as countless other bestselling science fiction and fantasy novels, has crafted a tale of unprecedented scope and imagination, at once a generations-spanning historical novel and a thrilling science fiction adventure.

There are two, neither in a common language. (I'm strange that way)

"In omnibus requiem quaesivi in nusquam in veni nisi in angulo cum libro" –Thomas a Kempis. (Everywhere, I have searched for peace, found it nowhere except in a corner with a book)

"Dakh pthak. Nam-tor ri ret na'fan-kitok fa tu dakh pthak." –Surak of Vulcan. (Cast out fear. There is no room for anything else until you cast out fear)

KarynGood Hope is not a strategy. Not sure who said it though... 6y
tournevis @KarynGood According to several sources online, it was Rudy Giuliani, in a negative response to Obama's campaign slogan. So, yeah. 6y

tournevis @KarynGood Out of context, it's a great quote. But in context, not so much. 6y
Itchyfeetreader This is a tough one maybe Dr Suess (and I paraphrase I think ) “sometimes you will never know the value of a moment until it becomes a memory” 6y

Too boring, too much canon divergence. Also plainly stupid parts. Why would Spock have to give a speech he would not believe in? And why would he have to leave Starfleet just because Vulcan leaves the Federation? Even back at that time people could still be citizens of one country and work in a completely different region of the earth, even during struggles between the two countries. If you write about Vulcans, write logically!

Why does everyone love this book? I‘m only on page 60 and already thinking about quitting. It‘s so out of character and not even canon compliant. 😢

TheBookDream I remember liking it, but it being kinda boring at parts. Also, for a lot of people Diane Duane IS canon, especially her series about the Romulans (which I haven't read) so I'm sure that's a factor. 7y
Taayasbooks @TheBookDream I quit. I just could not stand it. It was partly boring and partly just so far from the show‘s canon that it hurt. I think I once read a good novel of hers but this is not among those I would want to be canon. 7y

This is a small section of a long shelf — all my Star Trek books. Not a single one of which I've read. Doesn't make sense. It's like I have them just to prove my loyalty. Got them all in bulk, years ago. Could never throw them away. But my tbr pile will never get low enough that I finally have time for these. Meaning? I'm just keeping them locked up, for ... vanity? nostalgia? Something like that. Anybody else have a shelf or two like this?

Zelma I used to have a shelf of classics I never got around to. But now I rotate my shelves so often that nothing sits unread. It either gets read within a few years or it's donated. 8y
LauraBrook Probably at least 15% of my library is like this and I'm nearing 3,000 books, so... Yeah. But I'm keeping them still! 8y
Eyelit I tend to go through genre phases, so I have quite a few shelves of books I've had for years just waiting for that phase to come around again. 8y

queerbookreader This is a beautiful collection at the very least 8y
Graciouswarriorprincess This is amazing! I love your collection. 8y
megt I definitely do the same thing. There are some sections of my bookshelves with stuff I know I'll probably never read. I've been able to weed some of it out, but some are going to be lifers. 8y
AlanBaxter I have the same areas of my shelves, including a Star Trek section and a Star Wars section. I read some of the Star Wars ones in my teens. 8y
BookNotes Most definitely. Several shelves (in multiple bookcases). And some that need to go on shelves. 😳😍 8y
