United States: Essays 1952-1992
United States: Essays 1952-1992 | Gore Vidal
3 posts | 1 read | 2 to read
From the age of Eisenhower to the dawning of the Clinton era, Gore Vidals United States offers an incomparably rich tapestry of American intellectual and political life in a tumultuous period. It also provides the best, most sustained exposure possible to the most wide-ranging, acute, and original literary intelligence of the postWorld War II years. United States is an essential book in the canon of twentieth-century American literature and an endlessly fascinating work.

In his new book, Martin Amis says that Saul Bellow and Nabokov were two authors whom he felt were writing just for him. Every word resonated and it seemed as though he was somehow communing personally with the writers. We discuss this author/reader relationship in the new episode. Do you have your own author who does this for you? For me, it's Gore Vidal.

GinaKButler First of all, I love your pup! Second, I‘ve never read Gore Vidal...what should I pick up first? 4y
Ruthiella I was just googling Vidal... I can‘t remember why, but I marked Burr on my library Overdrive list this week. I really want to start with Myra Breckinridge, which none of my libraries have in ebook or physical format. I‘ll have to buy a copy. Kate Atkinson comes close for me as the kind of author you are talking about. We share a jaded worldview that isn‘t without a small sliver of hope. 4y
Therewillbebooks @GinaKButler Thanks! If you like historical fiction I'd go with Burr or Julian. His essays are all really good and they're fun to dip in and out of. 4y

Therewillbebooks @Ruthiella I really like the Jackson Brodie books and I've been wanting to read Life After Life for a while now. I'm curious to know what you think of Burr and/or Myra when you do get ahold of them. 4y
GinaKButler @Therewillbebooks Thanks! I‘ve been meaning to read him since he was a character in Ladder To The Sky by John Boyne. 4y
Therewillbebooks @GinaKButler No problem! I'm gonna have to check out Ladder to the Sky now. 4y
GinaKButler @Therewillbebooks Maurice is the best villain ever! Loved that book! 4y
