Pickpick

Every reader has a book shelf filled with those strange "special interest" books, the books which are not necessarily embarrassing just hard to explain. My shelf is filled with books about eccentric Europeans going to foreign climes exploring for things that the locals already know about and quite often coming to a horrible end from violence, disease or starvation as a result. This book is a fine addition to this genre detailing the explorations

Oblomov26 of Burton, Speke, Baker, Livingstone and Stanley in search of the Nile and the consequences of these exploration to the future history of Africa. The only quibble I have is with the author's evident dislike for Richard Francis Burton an outrageous man full of contradictions and vanities, but undoubtedly brave, intelligent and deliberately anti-establishment in action. 9y
