I loved this book! A mad window into the world of an eccentric A lister who for a second makes you want to puke cos they have it all but the humanity and connectedness that Byron weaves out of it makes you realise they are still humans with their own core insecurities and problems. It doesn‘t make fun of the mental illness we encounter but rather shows us what it feels like to be on the receiving end of the highs and lows that come with that.

This book is far more sad than it is funny. I don‘t find mental illness “riotously funny”. Had this been marketed differently I may have enjoyed it more. It wasn‘t what I was looking for right now. I am still curious to see what Byron Lane writes next as this was well written.

I wasn‘t quite ready to read this wondrous piece of fiction inspired by the author‘s IRL experiences with Carrie Fisher and her mother. Their deaths were still too heartbreaking then. . However, this week I host The Guncle for my IRL bookclub and thought I might add to the discussion by reading the work of Rowley‘s husband, as well. Oh my goodness, I was ready to read it now and loved it!

I so enjoyed this book! Funny and touching, it beautifully tells the story of an aging star and her new assistant - both of whom are broken in their their own unique way - and the bond they come to share. I learned of this book after having thoroughly enjoyed The Guncle, which was written by the author‘s husband. I am so glad I did!

My box from Book Outlet‘s sale arrived today. I ordered the books that I had in my wish list.

🎧📚 I recommend Wishful Drinking read by Carrie Fisher. I fell in love with that audiobook. It felt like truth & I suspected a little acting which made me smile. Listen to WD 1st.

This author was her personal assistant for 3 years & he‘s still making $ off of her (only reason I bought the book). It‘s fiction but he clearly based it loosely on his time with her.

This book made me LAUGH & cry. Remember, it‘s a work of fiction. Enjoy!

It was kind of funny and definitely written with heart. I found Kathi‘s self absorption really hard to take at times. Kinda meh for me.

“I‘m thinking…” “Hey Siri…” “Therapista says…” lines that will stick with you after reading this. You can‘t help but think of Carrie Fisher…I‘m sure most of this book was based on his time as her assistant. What a ride!

A Star is Bored is loosely based Lane‘s own experiences as a celebrity assistant to Carrie Fisher. The novel is a tribute to the dynamic partnership that, at least in the case of this protagonist and his star employer, grows from personal assistant to so much more. A sweet and warm hearted story about navigating life, the Hollywood “shine,” and friendship.

Full of laughs and a few tears, A Star Is Bored by Byron Lane is a hilarious look at the life of a personal assistant to a Hollywood icon. Written by Carrie Fischer‘s former personal assistant, the premise of the book makes it seem more like a memoir but he claims what takes place in the book is pure fiction. Whatever the case may be, the characters are all very entertaining and endearing. This was a welcome break from the horror of 2020.

Kathi is an aging star, riddled with issues. Charlie is her new assistant. I wanted to see more of their interactions instead of sweeping montages that eluded to their growing partnership. I chuckled,but found the story finding itself funnier than it was. The characters were varying levels of co-dependent messes, making the reader feel guilty for laughing at all. It tries to redeem itself, but the wrap up came off feeling forced rather than final.

I just got into NetGalley (I know, I know) and this is one of two books that came through today. I‘m excited to get started!

This is the story of Charlie, who is looking to change his mundane life. He interviews and accepts a position as a personal assistant to a Hollywood Star Kathi Kannon, who has become sort of a “has-been”. We spend the next 3 years looking into their relationship.
