"A Brief History of Time," Beers' first collection of poetry, is at once an exploration of what it is to grow up in rural America and a treatise for social justice. These poems, many of them award-winning, span a wide range of styles-from plainsong free verse to sestinas to nearly epic works. The characters/speakers in Beers' poems range from the rural working class to mythological characters. These poems look at the world with an honest, unflinching eye. She is one of the up-and-coming poets from Generation X we will be hearing a great deal from in the future.

I don‘t read poetry; it‘s just not my thing. When I tried Twitter for a brief moment, I got to know this author for her tweets and personality. I thought I‘d check out one of her books and it exceeded all expectations. Her poetry often reads more like short stories. Her work deals with heavy, realistic subject matter like growing up in and trying to escape a small Midwestern town, abuse, and lots of loss in various forms. Highly recommended, 4.5/5

This is a book of poems from my #tbrexplode project and is the poet's debut collection (she has more, which is good news to me!) I like how she talks about the body, relationships, rural life and how it effect the body and relationships, politics and more. The poet now teaches in eastern Oregon.
