May 2026 Book #6 (last one read this month, see I didn‘t read much this year)

My intention to read this book was to understand better James by Percival Everett who was the author on May. But it didn‘t happen, I haven‘t read James yet. Wow, this is a controversial story due to its racist content. You can read in GR a lot of comments in favor or con. So interesting in that way. But I try to read these type of books within the time frame ⬇️

Gissy (Cont.)…it was written since it will reflect part of the history or author perspective. It is also considered a satirical story which it could be expected some uncomfortable expressions. The story has parts that you can laugh but others definitely can be so offensive this time. For what I read in GR reviews I think it could be a story to analyze and compare that time and current time analyze many concepts and how racism is in this novel⬇️ 2w
Gissy (Cont.) I‘m not an expert in literature but I think with this novel we can learn to not continue doing the same mistakes in our present history…I wish I could know who read and analyze these topics among those (who called themselves)“leaders” out there 🤔
3.8/4⭐️love my gorgeous edition and bookmark.

TheAromaofBooks Oooo what a fabulous edition!!! 2w
Gissy I have a couple of classics from that publisher. They published 4 books each season during a period of time, I don‘t know if they continue doing it. The colors were that blue, green mint, brown and white (I don‘t own…yet..the white one). Each book comes with the bookmark in that design. 😍 2w

Huck Finn escapes his home and travels on the Mississippi River with Jim, a runaway slave. Together, they face adventures and learn about friendship and doing the right thing. This important story shows why it's good to follow your heart and stand up for what you believe.

The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain is about a boy named Huck who runs away from home to find freedom. He teams up with Jim, a runaway slave, and they travel down the Mississippi River on a raft. They have many adventures and learn about friendship and what‘s right and wrong. This classic story uses humor to talk about serious topics like friendship and freedom

This opens so well constructed. Huck and his world lives. His situation, his dad, his escape, Jim‘s position, the river. Wonderful stuff. But…Twain can‘t let things go. I thought it devolved into a mess of overdone satire. Still, i can appreciate what it does overall, and it was interesting to wonder what Jim was thinking. This is part of my #booker #booker2024 #longlist reading. It was prep for James.

KathyWheeler I also listened to this in preparation for James. The parts with the King and the Duke were far too long. 1y
Graywacke @KathyWheeler completely agree 1y

Aimeesue I did the same prep for James. And was Horrified by Huck‘s father and, to be honest Tom. Did a tunnel? Good lord. 🙄 1y
squirrelbrain @KathyWheeler - I agree, those parts were way too long! (I listened to it prior to James too) 1y
Graywacke @Aimeesue Huck‘s father is a mess. Made good character building for Huck, though. I got nothing for Tom. 1y
BarbaraBB Kudos for reading Huck first. I read it years ago and hated it so didn‘t want to reread it. Maybe I should have. 1y
Leniverse @Aimeesue I detest Tom Sawyer and was horrified by the ending. It felt good to read James afterwards 😂 1y
Aimeesue @Leniverse Indeed it did! 1y

Listening to this one before I start Perceval Everett‘s JAMES. Elijah Wood does a good job narrating. He won‘t make it onto my Favorite Narrators list - he‘s no Simon Vance - but it‘s pretty good.

This is a very problematic and difficult read. I listened to it in preparation for Percival Everett's new novel, James. I did not enjoy this text at all! I can't believe this use to be taught in schools.

BarbaraBB I couldn‘t finish this one either when I read it years ago. I am Sure Percival Everett did a better job! 2y
rmaclean4 @BarbaraBB I loved The Trees. Am excited for James. 2y
dabbe #fanofthepan I enjoyed THE ADVENTURES OF TOM SAWYER much more than HUCK FINN. It is a hard read--especially now. 2y
shortsarahrose I HATED this book when I had to read it in high school 2y
