I decided to read this historical fiction novel set in 1623 Madrid while I was visiting the city on my recent vacation. The photos are all from the Royal Palace.

I really enjoyed this fast-paced adventure story, filled with interesting historical details and likable characters, and I've put the next book in the series on my TBR.

17th century Spanish swashbucklers. I love this series. Anyone else read this series or other Perez-Reverte? #adventrecommends

MaureenMc I haven‘t read this one, but I loved The Club Dumas and The Flanders Panel. (I really need to read more of him.) 2y

I love Pérez-Reverte's more 'serious' books, but this proved a good, historically grounded swashbuckling tale. Alatriste is far from perfect and makes a great main character. Looking forward to other books in the series. 2019 no. 11

This is my favourite adventures series after Dumas' musketeers. Perez-Reverte has fun taking us readers into an heroically adventure after a tired, worn hero with a past of bravery and glory. Alatriste is a mix of Athos, Porthos and Aramis. It's a book I've reread many times. Do check out the movie adaptation, Viggo Mortensen is very good in it. ⚔💖

Okay a recommendation for the Alatriste series, which can be thought of as the Spanish musketeer. A memoir told by Inigo, Alatriste's ward, detailing his youth with the "Captain". A soldier who serves with Spanish army at a time when it is the greatest fighting force in Europe. The series cover political intrigues, assassinations, corruption, piracy raids and battles, but told from the view of a participant rather than a central player.
