Then There Were Five
Then There Were Five | Elizabeth Enright
1 post | 5 read
With Father in Washington and Cuffy, their housekeeper, away visiting a sick cousin, almost anything might happen to the Melendy kids left behind at the Four-Story Mistake. In the Melendy family, adventures are inevitable: Mr. Titus and the catfish; the villainy of the DeLacey brothers; Rush's composition of Opus 3; Mona's first rhubarb pie and all the canning; Randy's arrowhead; the auction and fair for the Red Cross. But best of all is the friendship with Mark Herron, which begins with a scrap-collection mission and comes to a grand climax on Oliver's birthday. Here is Elizabeth Enright's classic story of a long and glorious summer in the country with the resourceful, endearing Melendy bunch. Then There Were Five is the third installment of Enright's Melendy Quartet, an engaging and warm series about the close-knit Melendy family and their surprising adventures.

Thinking I'd read a childhood favorite as a palate cleanser --third book in The Melendy Family series-- and come across this early in. 🤦‍♀️. It's a WW 2 era sentiment that must have gone right over my head, reading it as a kid .

Some trivia-- recently learned the author Elizabeth Enright's mother was the younger sister of Frank Lloyd Wright.

LeahBergen Isn't it shocking when you come across this in old faves? I wonder if they've edited it in newer editions? What year is your copy? 7y
MidnightBookGirl So many of the romances I read as a teen are legit horrifying to me as an adult. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @LeahBergen yes, definitely surprising. It's a paperback reissue, 2008, so apparently not edited up to then 😐. It does includes the original interior illustrations. I read this over and over as part of a trilogy edition from the library way back when, and that same edition sells online for at least $75! 7y
