Beatrix Potter: A Life in Nature | Linda Lear
4 posts | 6 read | 9 to read
Peter Rabbit, Mr. McGregor, and many other Beatrix Potter characters remain in the hearts of millions. However, though Potter is a household name around the world, few know the woman behind the illustrations. Her personal life, including a romantic relationship with her publisher, Norman Warne, and her significant achievements outside of children's literature remain largely unknown. In Linda Lear's enchanting new biography, we get the life story of this incredible, funny, and independent woman. As one of the first female naturalists in the world, Potter brought the beauty and importance of nature back into the imagination at a time when plunder was more popular than preservation. Through her art she sought to encourage conservation and change the world. With never before seen illustrations and intimate detail, Lear goes beyond our perrenial fascination with Potter as a writer and illustrator of children's books, and delves deeply into the life of a most unusual and gifted woman--one whose art was timeless, and whose generosity left an indelible imprint on the countryside.

Pickpick

Full disclosure I love anything and everything Beatrix Potter. She was not only an amazing storyteller and artist she was also a keen scientific mind. This was a very interesting #nonfiction read that I highly recommend. #bookspin @thearomaofbooks

SayersLover @KristiAhlers have you read “Unearthing the Secret Garden” yet? I recommend it if you love gardens or Beatrix Potter. 10mo
TheBookHippie I love her. 10mo
TheAromaofBooks Oooo I will have to check this one out! I read McDowell's book at Beatrix Potter + Gardens (same author as the book @SayersLover recommended), which I enjoyed but found hard to follow sometimes because the author seemed to think the reader already knew a lot about Potter's life. So this may be a good one to pick up to give myself more background about her!! 10mo
KristiAhlers @TheAromaofBooks I just ordered the tagged book today! Now I'm really looking forward to it arriving! 10mo
TheAromaofBooks The Gardening Life book is SO pretty!!! It's full of photographs and drawings. I literally bought it because I just liked the way it looked/felt 😂 But I was really hoping that she would go through Potter's books in a more organized manner so that I could kind of read the books/this book in tandem. It just wasn't laid out exactly how I wanted it to be haha But it was still very enjoyable!! 10mo
