Remembering Laughter | 
pickI've been on a Wendell Berry kick; this was a perfect accompaniment. Berry even reviewed this short novel that was Stegner's first book (originally the winner of a novellete prize): "clean, swift, and assured, and I can still feel the weight of the disaster in it."
Rich farmland descriptions, vivid characters, and brutal despair that weaves itself into a cautionary tale.
