Treeborne: A Novel | Caleb Johnson

In the tradition of Daniel Wallaces Big Fish and Amanda Coplins The Orchardist comes a debut novel of an unusual family who have made their home at the margins of an unusual place. Janie Treeborne lives on an orchard at the edge of Elberta, Alabama, and in time, she has become its keeper. A place where conquistadors oncewalked, and where the peaches they left behind now grow, Elberta has seenfierce battles, violent storms, and frantic changeand when the town is onceagain threatened from without, Janie realizes it wont withstand much more. Soshe tells the story of its people: of Hugh, her granddaddy, determined topreserve Elbertas legacy at any cost; of his wife, Maybelle, the postmaster, whose sudden death throws the town into chaos; of her lover, Lee Malone, ablack orchardist harvesting from a land where he is less than welcome; of thetime when Janie kidnapped her own Hollywood-obsessed aunt and tore the wrongpeople apart. As the world closes in on Elberta, Caleb Johnsons debut novel lifts the veil and offers one last glimpse. Treeborne is a celebration and a reminder: of how the past gets mixed up in thoughts of the future; of how home is a story as much as a place.

A delightfully weird book! There is a lot of violence (and a brief incident of animal death, which I was warned about), but I loved Treeborne family!

Fantastic debut! This is not for the queasy.

A classic gothic by an electric new addition to Southern letters. Equal parts Cormac McCarthy and Faulkner plus a splash of something I can't identify yet probably because it is unique to Johnson's voice. For those of you who want to try a gritty read with some seriously kick ass prose and aren't put off by some really dark spaces, this is for you!

Kaye Can you go into any more detail on the dark spaces ? Blood and guts or nekkid stuff ? 7y
FountainBookstore Let's just say if you're sensitive to any of it, this is probably not for you. No person or animal, dead or alive is safe from violence. It's a beautiful, but brutal world he portrays. @Kaye (edited) 7y
