Talking to My Daughter About the Economy
Talking to My Daughter About the Economy: A Brief History of Capitalism | Yanis Varoufakis
Why is there so much inequality? In this short book, world famous economist Yanis Varoufakis sets out to answer his daughter Xenias deceptively simple question. Using personal stories and famous myths from Oedipus and Faust to Frankenstein and The Matrix he explains what the economy is and why it has the power to shape our lives. Intimate yet universally accessible, Talking To My Daughter About the Economy introduces readers to the most important drama of our times, helping to make sense of a troubling world while inspiring us to make it a better one.

To be honest, I'm not sure if I like this book because it's good or just because I agree with the author about the limitations of profit-driven society and the ability of The Market to solve all the world's problems. I suppose it's possible I like it for both reasons. At the very least, it's engagingly written and is perhaps the most enjoyable book about economics that I have read.

Audiobaking GF bread and learning about the origins of capitalism.

Soubhiville That looks amazing. I can almost smell the deliciousness. 4y
Clare-Dragonfly That looks lovely! 4y
ImperfectCJ @Soubhiville It turned out quite well. This was a Bob's Red Mill mix, so I can't take full credit. I make my own from-scratch bread, too, but the mix gives more reliable/consistent results than my go-to recipes. 4y
ImperfectCJ @Clare-Dragonfly Thanks! It's almost gone already, thanks to the carb-lovers in my house. 4y

I found this one to be a mixed bag. Some of the essays were clear and clever, but others were a bit convoluted and the chosen metaphor or example was a bit complicated and/or didn‘t quite match back up to the concept it was illustrating quite seamlessly. But, on the whole, his examples and explanations were accessible and memorable. #netgalley

I loved this book. I could feel the love and desire for a parent to shape a kind moral compass in every page. I think I irritated my 9 year old by talking to her about It, because she was a little young. A good read for anyone who wants to understand why society is arranged in the way it is. A particularly good narrative to explain how inequality and debt began, in a historical context.

This is one of the best books I‘ve ever read and I cannot recommend it more!

SO easily accessible with engaging anecdotes and allegories. Yanis starts right at the beginning of society and answers questions I didn‘t even know I needed answers to, like: why didn‘t the Australian aborigines invade England?

This book makes understanding and talking about the economy so much easier! It even explains bitcoin! And it is a pleasure to read?! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
