Dark Rooms: A Novel | Lili Anolik

The Secret History meets Sharp Objects in this stunning debut about murder and glamour set in the ambiguous and claustrophobic world of an exclusive New England prep school. Death sets the plot in motion: the murder of Nica Baker, beautiful, wild, enigmatic, and only sixteen. The crime is solved, and quicklya lonely classmate, unrequited love, a suicide note confessionbut memory and instinct wont allow Nicas older sister, Grace, to accept the case as closed. Dropping out of college and living at home, working at the moneyed and progressive private high school in Hartford, Connecticut, from which she recently graduated, Grace becomes increasingly obsessed with identifying and punishing the real killer. Compulsively readable, Lili Anoliks debut novel combines the verbal dexterity of Marisha Pessls Special Topic in Calamity Physics and the haunting atmospherics and hairpin plot twists of Megan Abbotts Dare Me.

I wish I had read this debut mystery in one or two big chunks, but I was reading it during the last few days of school when things were chaotic. Nevertheless, this story of a recent HS grad who is trying to find out who murdered her sister is well-written and complex. It is not, despite the age of the narrator, YA.

Oy. This story had potential but was ruined by a "shocking plot twist" that isn't too original anymore and a completely underwhelming resolution, if you can even call it resolution. This was just a hot mess, but the book blurb "Megan Abbott meets Twin Peaks" is what intrigued me. Never judge a book by its blurb ?

Mehso-so

Suspense Audio I have mixed feelings about the book now that it's done. The tidy bow ending was annoying as was the overly generous portion of suspended disbelief. The content was in your face but didn't go anywhere. If you are going to include shock value, push over the whole table not just the envelope. I think The First Time She Drowned does a better job than Dark Rooms at evoking an emotional response. This ended up feeling forced and contrite

It was interesting enough to keep my attention through a long work day but the ending was a bit anticlimactic and disappointing.
