The Umbrella
The Umbrella: board book | Jan Brett
19 posts | 9 read | 3 to read
A walk through the Costa Rican cloud forest provides a wonderfully lush setting for Jan Brett's beloved animal illustrations. When Carlos drops his umbrella to climb a tree for a better view of the animals, they all cram into the banana-leaf umbrella as it floats by--from the little tree frog to the baby tapir to the big jaguar and more. It gets so crowded in the umbrella that there isn't even enough room for a little hummingbird! So over the umbrella tumbles, everyone falls out, and poor Carlos comes back wondering why he didn't see any animals all day. In the spirit of Jan Brett's The Mitten and The Hat, this cheerful tale of escalation will have readers poring over every illustration for the world of details Jan packs in. With its classic story, exotic jungle setting, and brilliantly colorful menagerie, The Umbrella is sure to take its place among Jan's many family favorites.

I may read this to my class and might use it to see if they can identify the different animals Carlos comes across

I really liked the illustrations in this book. It was an interesting story and I liked how it gave a close up of the different animals Carlos was finding

Gorgeous lush illustrations. Carlos walks into the cloud forest to spot some animals. Leaving his umbrella at the foot of a tree, he climbs up to see what he can see. A tree frog sees the puddle forming in the upturned umbrella, and settles in. Other animals soon find a use for it, and adventure ensues. Spanish words are dotted throughout the book.

mom2bugnbee Anything she writes is absolutely amazing. We had the privilege to meet her years ago on a book tour, & she couldn't have been more engaging & kind with my (then) young girls. 4y

The Umbrella is a RF book written and illustrated by Jan Brett, perfect book for RA in class, especially if your on a topic of animals. The story is about a young boy named Carlos who is excited to see the many different animals in the rainforest. http://www.janbrett.com/mural_umbrella/umbrella_mural.htm the link above is a fun activity from Jan Brett website, it shows the variety of animals and Carlos in a PDF page. Teachers can print the pages

SierraC And students will color the images, they can be as creative as they want! My ESOL strategies are 2 and 4, I want my students to work in small groups and discuss the animals. My UDL strategy is 1.2 and 1.3 students will see the animals from the book but Instead I can show them in a the computer and a video. They can hear the noises the animals make! 6y
DrSpalding This is not realistic fiction. It can be classified as a traditional literature variant or fantasy. Creativity with arts integration is a must in your classroom. 6y

The Umbrella is New York Times Children‘s Picture Book Bestseller List winner. It‘s a low fantasy picture book. Carlos goes into the cloud forest to go see the many different animals and leaves behind his umbrella as he climbs a tree. The animals jump in and go on an adventure. I think this book would be great addition to your classroom library. I would use this book as either a DR or a RT.

Gabylaurel10 http://www.janbrett.com/the_umbrella_play.htm This books lines up perfectly with UDL principles of 1.1, 1.2, and 1.3 of offering different ways to display auditory and visual information, especially if doing an RT. Since there is some Spanish in the book giving the Spanish speaking character to an Hispanic ESOL students will help them feel comfortable reading aloud along with ESOL strategy 4 of linking prior knowledge! #UCFLAE3414SuB18 6y
DrSpalding Technically this is traditional literature. This is Brett‘s version of the mitten but set in the Amazon rain forest. Having books with Spanish words embedded much like the Skippy books, are beneficial to your classroom library. 6y
