so-soThis book took me a while to get through. It has great world-building & tons of magic w/ some political intrigue, yet there was something missing. The characters are mostly one-dimensional &, while it was interesting enough to read w/ lots of action & surprises, I was bored more often than not, just waiting for that mind-blowing moment to suck me in. Yet it never arrived. Even big events fell flat. There‘s very little to no intensity/tension. 3/5.
I‘m about 50 pages in and I like it so far. The pacing is decent, the world-building enough to whet my interest without feeling overwhelming or not enough. The characters, while there aren‘t many so far, seem fascinating enough as well. I also have a mild sense of the political climate. I think (hope sincerely) this will turn out good!

Starting this book tonight. It‘s the first in a 4-book series about a dude condemned for killing the bastard that dishonoured his sister. Then the icy wasteland of a penal colony he‘s sent to stops receiving shipments of goods for their survival. Realising that stuff with the kingdom probably hit the fan hard, the criminals decide to take matters into their own hands.
