Looking For The Possible Dance
Looking For The Possible Dance | A.L. Kennedy
2 posts | 3 read | 3 to read
Mary Margaret Hamilton was educated in Scotland. She was born there too. These may not have been the best possible options, but they were the only ones on offer at the time. Although her father did his best, her knowledge of life is perhaps a little incomplete. Margaret knows the best way to look at the moon, how to wake on time and how to breathe fire. Now she must learn how to live. A. L. Kennedy's absorbing, moving and gently political first novel dissects the intricate difficulties of human relationships, from Margaret's passionate attachment to her father and her more problematic involvement with Colin, her lover, to the wider social relations between pupil and teacher, employer and employee, individual and state.

Pickpick

#1001books This was a gem. Margaret is grieving the loss of her father, her job and possibly her relationship. She takes a train ride to London, ordering her memories, and receives a boost from a physically disabled boy named James. This touches on many issues that are still current, and Kennedy writes with such a deft hand. Fans of Ali Smith would like this.

Mehso-so

A lot of seemingly loose storylines and then in the end you realize it all makes sense.
This is the story of Margaret, who is raised by and very close to her father. He learns her lots of stuff but not how to live her life. This has its effects on her relationship with her boyfriend, but also on her position as an employee. And perhaps even on the friendship with a handicapped boy in the train to London.
Intimate and weird novel. #1001books
