Wait, What?
Wait, What?: And Life's Other Essential Questions | James E. Ryan
8 posts | 7 read | 5 to read
Joining the ranks of Tina Seeligs What I Wish I Knew When I Was 20, Clayton Christensens How Will You Measure Your Life, Mary Karrs Now Go Out There, and George Saunders Congratulations, By the Way comes an insightful guide that reveals the secret to pursuing a rich, fulfilling life: the art of asking (and answering) good questions. In his commencement address to the graduating class of 2016, James E. Ryan, dean of the Harvard University Graduate School of Education, offered remarkable advice to the crowd of hopeful men and women eager to make their mark on the world. The key to achieving emotional connections and social progress he told them, can be found in five essential questions: Wait, what? I wonder if . . . Couldnt we at least? How can I help? What truly matters? "Wait, what?" is at the root of all understanding. "I wonder" is at the heart of all curiosity. "Couldnt we at least?" is the beginning of all progress. "How can I help?" is the basis of all good relationships. And "what truly matters?" gets you to the heart of life. By regularly asking these questions, Ryan promises, you will be prepared to enthusiastically answer "Yes" to one finaland, ultimately, most importantquestion: "And did you get what you wanted out of life, even so?" In this thoughtful, illuminating book, Ryan builds upon his wildly popular and universally praised address which has been viewed more than four million times online. Wait, What? offers further insights into the art of asking good questions, highlighted by hilarious and surprising anecdotes from Ryans personal and professional life, as well as stories from politics, popular culture, and social movements throughout history. Engaging and inspiring, Wait, What? will change the way you look at yourself and the world, and, in the process, help you get what you want most out of life.

My friend asked me for book recommendations to gift to her relatives who are graduating in a few weeks. One from high school and one from college. I forwarded her an article with suggestions. She was intrigued by this one from the list. So,she downloaded it from Hoopla, and was so impressed that she wanted me to read it too.

Since my Library system did not have it on audio, she loaned me her IPad. I‘m glad she did! Inspiring. Quick read.

The five essential questions that we should ask in life; Wait, what?, I wonder…?, Couldn‘t we at least…?, How can I help?, and What truly matters? Is decent advise but I found the author and dull as the content. But then I‘m not big on self-help books. The audio version seemed interesting enough.

This book was an expansion of his commencement address, which didn't add any more clarity or wisdom to the original speech. It felt like someone told him " just bulk it up so it seems like a book, and we can make some money out of this.

For anyone going through a transition, good or bad. Ryan's expanded graduation speech really helped me center on how to shut down the noise and look at what is important in life by focusing on a few "essential questions ". I truly believe this book could be inspiring for almost anyone at any age. I only wish he had written sooner, for selfish reasons. @HarperCollins

The author did a great job reading his own audiobook. That never happens.

TheLondonBookworm The title works perfectly for the UK elections right now aha 8y

Needed a short audiobook to listen to with the parents as we did a round-trip drive to Bellingham, Washington, today, so we plugged in this inspirational number. So far so good--lots of food for thought, so to speak, based around the important questions we should be asking of the world and ourselves. A good choice for any soon-to-be graduates!

Thanks to Libro.fm. For the listen! #audiobook #WaitWhat @HarperCollins #inspirational #questions
