Glyph | Percival Everett
1 post | 3 read | 2 to read
In paperback for the first time, the much-beloved satirical novel "The" "New York Times" praised as "both a treatise and a romp" Baby Ralph has ways to pass the time in his crib but they don't include staring at a mobile. Aided by his mother, he reads voraciously: "All of Swift, all of Sterne, "Invisible Man," Baldwin, Joyce, Balzac, Auden, Roethke," along with a generous helping of philosophy, semiotics, and trashy thrillers. He's also fond of writing poems and stories (in crayon). But Ralph has limits. He's mute by choice and can't drive, so in his own estimation he's not a genius. Unfortunately for him, everyone else disagrees. His psychiatrist kidnaps him for testing, and once his brilliance is quantified (IQ: 475), a Pentagon officer also abducts him. Diabolically funny and lacerating in its critique of poststructuralism, "Glyph" has the feverish plot of a thriller and the philosophical depth of a text by Roland Barthes. If anyone can map the wilds of literary theory, it's Ralph, one of Percival Everett's most enduring creations."

And in books I bought purposely while awake…

I‘m trying to read more backlist titles, so I picked Passing from @vivastory ‘s #NYWD22 list and one from Everett‘s - very excited to try some more from him!

vivastory I've never seen that edition of Passing. I hope you like it! I also want to read more Everett. I thoroughly enjoyed Telephone. 3y
sarahbarnes I want to read more Everett, too. 3y
Megabooks @vivastory it was down a rabbit hole on Amazon! I still think of Telephone often a year later. Definitely check out The Trees by Everett. It would‘ve been on my nywd list if she had asked two weeks later. (edited) 3y

Megabooks @sarahbarnes I‘ve only read the two that made the last two tob shortlists, and I want to read several more. He has immense creativity! 3y
Cinfhen I have passing on my #NYWD list too!! I plan on reading it this week 💕💕 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen can‘t wait to discuss it with you!! 3y
Cinfhen When should we read it???? 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I‘m going to read it around to paradise so I‘m not sure exactly the day. I want to discuss it but I‘m not ready to commit a true buddy read 💜💜 3y
Cinfhen Fair enough!! My copy is less than 60 pages so I also may pick it up today. I‘m listening to SunDown Motel also from @MallenNC list and while I like it, it‘s really outside my normal genres. I don‘t take to paranormal naturally but the audio is fun 🤩 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen I I enjoyed SDM. I think it was my favorite fiction of February 2019. I was surprised because it‘s not my genre either but I thought it was very well done. 3y
Megabooks @Cinfhen having a weird time since Nashville. I tried the new plant based protein chorizo at chipotle and had a Cheerwine and I think the combination overwhelmed me. I‘m not gi sick (no meat/no gluten) but I think it‘s behind my weird dreams, book buying, and dizziness. I‘ve always been sensitive to new things, but I am so bored with foods right now!! 😞🤪 it‘s going to be a long night. Will email when I feel normal!! 😘😘 3y
Cinfhen Oh no!! Hope you get some restful sleep 😴 so weird, my day is beginning and you‘re just heading to bed. 3y
