005. Georgi Gospodinov: Natural Novel (1999, tr. Zornitza Hristova, 2005)

Bulgarian pomo about a writer trying to deal with his divorce. Lots of fun diversions (botany, books…even a bible for flies!) in this puzzle box of a book, but muddy on the ‘Natural Novel‘ concept.

Pickpick

The antipode of the Pulp Fiction, curated with the charms of the Western Balkans. Disturbingly beautiful.

My trip to Bulgaria was interesting. The book was a stream of musings by an author after he and his wife divorce. From reflections on the joy of toilets to a bible for flies- im not entirely sure that i understood it but as with most of my around the world literary journey it's fascinating to visit different literary styles often informed by the countries history - I'll say so so as i cant honestly recommend but my gr review may reflect higher.

Amidst a bonkers book a quote stood out which ive taken a picture of- the joy of travelling the world in books is the wonder of the narrative form and this book is bizarre but full of much wheat admist a lot of chaff.
