I love this book very much. The writing, every bits of words is just mesmerising. Sedih.

"The Sinking of Van der Wijck" tells a story how cultural desegregation impacted society, in this case, the love life of Zainuddin and Hayati.

The message is very clear. The confusion between Islam and traditional norms always come between and it's definitely tearing the society apart.

This story broke my heart in so many ways, the pain of an orphan, an outcast, the lovebirds, where were torn apart in life, but bonded together eternally.

The poetry in Malay culture (called Pantun) usually consists of the first two rhythmic yet meaningless lines. These lines are usually used to compliment the rhyming of the next two lines, which contains the message of Pantun itself.

This "pantun" BTW, emphasized on how wealth is playing a huge role to family, in which roughly translated as "If you don't have the wealth, the sisters (family) become strangers".
