The Getaway
The Getaway | Jim Thompson
8 posts | 11 read | 4 to read
Doc McCoy is the most skilled criminal alive. But when for the first time in Doc's long criminal career, his shot doesn't hit the mark, everything begins to fall apart. And Doc begins to realize that the perfect bank robbery isn't complete without the perfect getaway to back it up. THE GETAWAY is the classic story of a bank robbery gone horribly wrong, where the smallest mistakes have catastrophic consequences, and shifting loyalties lead to betrayals and chaos. The basis for the classic Steve McQueen film of the same name, as well as a 1994 remake with Alec Baldwin, Thompson's novel set the bar for every heist story that followed--but as Thompson's proved time and again, nobody's ever done it better than the master.

I‘m not afraid to admit that when the ending of a novel or film confuses me, I take to the Net to see other people‘s takes; I had to do this with The Getaway. Up until the final quarter, everything was hitting the right beats. I‘d say it is nearly perfect, as far as this genre goes. Regarding the ending, it‘s not so much what Thompson does but the way he does it. The execution undermines the novel‘s tone but not so much to avoid it.

Furthering my dive into pulp/noir/crime fiction with a couple Jim Thompson novels I found at the library. I‘ve always enjoyed noir films but have read very few novels in that genre. I feel it‘s time to remedy that.

#NotBookRelated

My country has slowly started opening up again, and I took the opportunity to flee the city for the weekend. Felt really great, the last three days flew by and was spent outside hiking and enjoying the nature ☀️It was a bit weird flying again, but they practiced social distancing on the flight with every seat in the middle empty.

erinreads Looks gorgeous! Also, on the plus side, no one likes the middle seat anyway! 😂 5y
Tanisha_A Looks lovely! 😍 5y

This takes a mad detour into Twilight Zone-madness for the last twenty pages, and I loved it

Ehh. It might have been me, but I couldn't get into this. I felt like I was skimming more than reading.

As I write this from prison, I can confirm that this book offers no helpful information. Still enjoyable regardless.

#sizzlinsummerreads My pick for #getawaysgonewrong has to be this. Clues in the title! I love Jim Thompson, he's one of the best authors I've ever read. This is a great dark crime/gangster novel. Like his other works the characters are highly memorable and there's the odd moment of humour too. His characters are always so devious and cunning. This novel also features a very memorable ending.
