Absolutely loved this family‘s story. It‘s about sisters who tragically lose their parents at a young age and are raised by their Sikh uncle. I had a huge emotional reaction to this most unusual family.

Note to Amazon: It‘s a pity that this book is not available in Kindle format. It would attract a lot of new readers.

This book has been recycled 3 or 4 times and it ended up with me. Guess it was meant to be.

Made the decision to listen to THE SUNSET TREE while reading the last hundred or so pages. That was a choice.

I don't know that the alternating-flashback structure was strictly necessary; a linear walk through the years might have been fine. But I do love a good complicated-sisterhood story.

Book 2 of my Canada Reads journey! A great book about sisters who are orphaned and left in the care of their uncle. One becomes a teen mother and one develops an eating disorder. The book spans a few decades jumping from the present (after the death of one) and the past. Entirely told through the eyes of one sister. Beautiful writing that draws one in. Critiques-a bit too long and some characters aren't developed. Still a great read!

Notafraidofwords I tried this one and I bailed after 60 pages. I couldn't connect with the writing. 9y
NerdyRev @Notafraidofwords I could see that. She does get a bit flow-y with her words. The pace is pretty much the same throughout too. It took me 5 days to get through because of the pace. 9y

Continuing my Canada Reads reading this week with one of the 5 contenders. I'm building to the winner. The writing in this book is so well done, but I have to say so far, it could have used some trimming. At almost 500 pages, it took almost 100 for them to be orphaned and that is the beginning of the main story-how the sisters will separate. I am interested in finding out what happens though. It will be released in the US soon too.

Bibliogeekery I loved this book! 9y

NerdyRev @Lindy Oh goodie! I can't wait! I read Birdie this week and it was great! 9y
Lindy Storytelling is more straightforward in The Illegal compared to Birdie. Both are excellent. 9y

The strong centre-piece of this novel is the way Saleema Nawaz beautifully evinces the complicated nature of the relationship between the sisters, both their closeness and also their desire to differentiate themselves from one another. Full review: http://goo.gl/9lg1tQ
