Shovel Ready: A Spademan Novel | Adam Sternbergh
10 posts | 16 read | 23 to read
The futuristic hardboiled noir that Lauren Beukes calls sharp as a paper-cut about a garbage man turned kill-for-hire. Spademan used to be a garbage man. That was before the dirty bomb hit Times Square, before his wife was killed, and before the city became a blown-out shell of its former self. Now hes a hitman. In a near-future New York City split between those who are wealthy enough to tap in to a sophisticated virtual reality, and those who are left to fend for themselves in the ravaged streets, Spademan chose the streets. When his latest client hires him to kill the daughter of a powerful evangelist, he must navigate between these two worldsthe wasteland reality and the slick fantasyto finish his job, clear his conscience, and make sure hes not the one who winds up in the ground. From the Hardcover edition.

A fascinating foray into a world wrecked by chaos, explored through the experiences of a regular man in quite irregular circumstances. The writing style took some getting used to, but it was a satisfying read.

Well, I didn't love it, but I didn't hate it either. A garbageman turned assassin in a dystopian New York, who helps a girl escape her father who is an Evangelist set on creating a New Heaven, seems like a good story. It's dark and twisty, which I like, but the lack of proper punctuation to distinguish dialogue really drove me nuts. It was an interesting read, but nothing exciting. I doubt I pick up the next book in this series anytime soon.

I'm struggling a little with this one. It's just not holding my attention very well. Since we have thunderstorms all weekend, maybe I can manage to finish it up. At least since it's raining, Penny decided she'd keep me company while I read. 😁 #dogsoflitsy

Tried staring this dystopian novel last night, but my cat Penelope had other ideas. 😁 Now I'll try and get in a little reading time on my lunch break.

Reading this now. Very cool combo of assassin with a moral code mixed with matrix-y type stuff. If you get a chance, you should take a look at it.

Spademan used to be a garbage man. But that was before his family was killed. Now, he's a hitman. This dystopian story has been on my TBR for awhile. #thedangeroustype #rockinmay

My SO leaves his recently read books here in the hopes that I will read them soon. After 10 years of watching them stack up here, I think he realizes the peril of putting books into the never-ending TBR. Of course, he walks away with many, too! 😜#somethingborrowed #booktober

stargazerblue49 I wish my hubs would do that! Instead, he goes to the library for the interwebs for video games and the Pokestop. 😐 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @stargazerblue49 We are total book nerds. On the weekend we'll just go sit in a cafe and read. Semi-social like. But you can read while he plays? 8y
stargazerblue49 Yeah. He's living in a small town in Iowa for a medical school rotation and his housing doesn't have Internet, so that's why he goes to he library there. But when we're together, it's usually me reading and him playing video games. 😬 8y
stargazerblue49 @CherylDeFranceschi That's not to say that he doesn't read at all. He'll read things off I shove them in his face and tell him he needs to so that I can talk to him about it. At least, that worked with the Hunger Games trilogy lol 8y
CherylDeFranceschi @stargazerblue49 Well- sometimes I wish we weren't such crazy readers because we are always the last to watch new good tv and we always have our faces in books, so I feel like we don't talk that much. No way is perfect, but love is love! 8y

#TBT: Two years ago, I finished this. It was really enjoyable! Dystopian NYC is in tatters after a dirty bomb. The poor live on the streets while the wealthy can escape reality w/sophisticated virtual reality tech. Spademan, a hitman & former garbageman, is on a job after an evangelist, which he can't complete without tapping into the virtual reality network. It fuses sci-fi & noir w/reality to explore human nature, religion, & class constructs. ⛏

I won this one in a giveaway from Book Riot a while ago. I started and stopped several times because I just wasn't in the mood or because the lack of punctuation bothered me, but this time I finished it. Entertaining noir.
