Chamber
Chamber | John Grisham
#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER In Chicago's top law firm, a young lawyer stands on the brink of a brilliant career. Now twenty-six-year-old Adam Hall is risking it all for a death-row killer and an impossible case: Sam Cayhall is a former Klansman and unrepentant racist facing the death penalty for a fatal bombing in 1967. Cayhall has run out of chances--except for one: a determined lawyer who just happens to be his grandson. While the executioners prepare the gas chamber, while the protesters gather, and while the TV cameras wait, Adam has only days, hours, minutes to save his client. For between the two men is a chasm of shame, family lies, and secrets--including the one secret that could save Sam Cayhall's life . . . or cost Adam his.

(1994) Unpopular opinion, but it didn't work for me: too slow, too bloated, too many subplots that go nowhere. It's a legal drama following the legal maneuvers of an unpleasant old bigot and his lawyer grandson who represents him, as they await his execution for a terrorist bombing. It's an extended meditation on Southern history and on the death penalty.Grisham is against it. So am I and for similar reasons, but I just found the book exhausting

swynn Also: this was the bestselling book in the U.S. in 1994, and the final book in my Bestseller challenge, which has covered 100 years of American bestsellers, beginning with Ian McClaren's "Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush" (1895) and ending with "The Chamber." 5mo
ChaoticMissAdventures Congratulations on your challenge!! I remember enjoying this when it came out, but I was also obsessed with Grisham in general and was maybe 16, so my ideas of a good book were quite different! 5mo
Ruthiella Wow! Impressive. 👏👏👏 How long has it taken you to complete the challenge? 5mo

swynn @ChaoticMissAdventures Or you might still like it -- it may just be a mismatch of book, reader, and moment. 5mo
swynn @Ruthiella Nearly ten years: I read "Beside the Bonnie Brier Bush" in January 2015 5mo

The decision to bomb the office of the radical Jew lawyer was reached with relative ease.

It was a really great story. I was disappointed with the ending, but only because it didn‘t tie everything up perfectly. It‘s a very well-written and likely ending. There were a few characters I was left wondering about.

This was good, but maybe not quite as good as many of Grisham‘s others. I think it was a bit slower. There were sort of two parts to it: the legal case being made and the pro/con death penalty, but also the story of a family with secrets, as Adam and Sam (and Adam and his aunt, Sam‘s daughter) get to know each other. I thought about upping my rating just a little at the end, but decided I‘d stick with how I felt through the majority of the book

Grisham's books are usually riddled with a bunch of #workaholics, fighting wrongs (or creating them) in the name of the legal system. #jubilantjuly

This was my view as I finished The Chamber for the second time! It's not only another masterpiece by Grisham, but it is a thought provoking look at issues of morality, guilt, innocence, race and family! It is an AMAZING read! Thanks @Human_Laurel_Tree for buying it for me!

Andrew65 This is one of his best, and what a place to read it! (edited) 8y
