The Yearling
The Yearling | Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings
No novel better epitomizes the love between a child and a pet than The Yearling. Young Jody adopts an orphaned fawn he calls Flag and makes it a part of his family and his best friend. But life in the Florida backwoods is harsh, and so, as his family fights off wolves, bears, and even alligators, and faces failure in their tenuous subsistence farming, Jody must finally part with his dear animal friend. There has been a film and even a musical based on this moving story, a fine work of great American literature.

I watched the movie adaptation of this years ago, probably when I was about 11 or 12. I remember the movie being really sad. The book also fairly sad, but not constantly. There are a lot of light-hearted, sweet moments as well.

Yes. Many plans, but I am most excited for my family's book discussion/club. My father chose The Yearling. There has already been one major argument over it so it may be a short-lived club. It was my idea because my Nanny just died and my mom had a heart attack. She is still really depressed.

2. No, but I want to get in the habit.

Lynnsoprano So sorry to hear about your family‘s loss. Hope your mom feels better soon. I think a family book club is a fantastic idea. 5y
Butterfinger Thank you @lynnsoprano. It might turn into the old Monopoly games where daddy threw the whole table when he lost. I just don't know how it is going to be, but at the moment both of them are excited. 5y

I'm so thrilled @TheBookHippie I hope I have the right person to thank. My two daughters, mother, sister, and I are starting our family book club. My 65 year old father wanted to join and it was a toss up between Where the Red Fern Grows and The Yearling.

For my birthday, my family got me this lovely edition of The Yearling (which I bought at the library book sale and they wrapped and gave to me with some vegan truffles, also purchased by me). Along with our copies of Bambi and Old Yeller, this helps me continue my tradition of traumatizing my children with literature.

LibrarianRyan Such lovely and sad BD gifts. Happy Happy. And I would say happy reading, but I have read these books and know that's not really possible. 😁 5y
ImperfectCJ @LibrarianRyan Happy reading works...Do you remember that song from the 90's, “I'm only happy when it rains“? I'm kind of like that. 😆 (edited) 5y
TheAromaofBooks I actually really love the original Bambi, despite it being somewhat depressing. Have you ever read the sequel, Bambi's Children? 5y

ImperfectCJ @TheAromaofBooks The original Bambi is fantastic, I agree! I haven't read Bambi's Children. I didn't realize there was a sequel! 5y
Christine Ah, the art of self-gifting. I know it well. 😂 5y
ImperfectCJ @Christine This way I don't have to pretend I like my gifts. 😉 5y
TheAromaofBooks It's been so long since I read it that I can't remember it very well, but it's very much in the theme of the original. I think Salten even wrote a few other stories that take place in the same forest as Bambi, focused on other animals, but I'm not as sure about that one! 5y

At the suggestion of @ljuliel , here are two books that had a strong emotional effect on me. I very rarely cry at books, but I made the mistake of reading The Yearling aloud to my daughter and sobbing my way through a whole section of it. Fierce Kingdom didn't bother me (except for the adrenaline rush) until I finished reading. I closed the back cover and lost it, snot, zubzubs, and all. Very unlike me.

And there you are!

rubyslippersreads The Yearling is heartbreaking. 🦌💔 5y
ImperfectCJ @rubyslippersreads Indeed. And I make a point of knowing as little about books as possible before I read them, so I was a little blindsided. I knew something bad was going to happen (animals in children's books often don't fare well), but ugh. 5y
rubyslippersreads @ImperfectCJ I doubt if I‘ll ever reread the book (although I have a lovely vintage copy) or watch the movie again. 😢 5y

TheBookAddict 💕💕💕 I have had The Yearling for a really long time but I haven‘t read it. I may have to read it soon. I‘ll make sure to keep a box of tissue handy. (edited) 5y
ImperfectCJ @TheBookAddict A box of tissues is well-advised. 😭 It really is a beautiful story, just rough. 5y
ImperfectCJ @rubyslippersreads I know what you mean. There was a Franklin Library edition at the library book sale yesterday, but I didn't buy it because I didn't think I'd read it again. Now that I think about it, though, I should probably go and buy it and all of the other Franklin editions they had... 5y
TheBookAddict @ImperfectCJ 😊💕 thanks for the tip. 5y
ImperfectCJ I should probably mention that both of these books affected me because of the parenting themes, trying to make the right choices for our children, the friction between wanting them to be happy in the moment and wanting to prepare them for the wider world, and not having any clue if what we're doing is the right thing or not. 5y
ljuliel Thank you for such a good post and explaining why you chose these books. Very well done 💕 (edited) 5y

This is my favorite book. Possibly from a different angle. The Mom spoke to my heart. After watching her other babies die early, she was forced to literally kill his chilhood in order to ensure his survival. New to litsy, and excited to figure it out. #LitsyWelcomeWagon

This book has taken me longer than necessary to finish reading. It‘s a quiet and thoughtful coming-of-age story. The writing is very descriptive and at some points I find the story dragging. Maybe I would have liked it better if I‘ve read it when I was a child. 🤷‍♀️ Glad I‘ve finally read it though.

It's an episodic book of sentimental stories about a boy and his family in rural Florida, and the wild fawn he brings into their home. Course, you all probably know all about it because it's a favorite for many many readers. I probably should have read it as a child, as did many who love it, because I'm afraid my window of optimal enjoyment is now closed: not enough incident for me, and too much dialect, though I did appreciate the nature writing.

UCLAoso I felt the same about A Wrinkle in Time, maybe would‘ve liked if I read it as a child 6y
swynn @UCLAoso I was also older when I finally read A Wrinkle in Time. I had tried it in grade school and couldn't get into it past the first chapter. Still, when I finally read it in my late twenties I thought, "That was okay but I wish I'd read it when I was younger." ☺️ 6y

Well, *that* puts a whole new spin on The Yearling:

"Ma Baxter's complaint was at lack of rain. Her brain barrels were empty."

Just in case there was any doubt: spelling matters. Obviously, this should read: "Her braaaains! barrels were empty."

Prompt: New Release

Here is my take on the prompt "New Release". I took the picture on the left from my sliding glass door. A deer gave birth in my yard. If you look closely you can see she is cleaning the fawn in the grass. Hince the new realease. This in turn got me to thinking of the tagged book. Does anyone remember reading this as a kid? ❤

Thousand-Lives Yes, read this in 6th grade! 💕 6y

RedxoHearts I love watching the deers here hang out and run around. Last year there were quite a few babies added to their group so it was fun seeing them grow up. One of the deer would sometimes run up and down the fence line with the dogs 6y

I went to The Yearling Restaurant for lunch today. Named for the famous book The Yearling by Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings. The author was from New York but wrote her books in Cross Creek Florida. Her house is located at a state park down the road from the restaurant but is closed for renovations. I‘ll have to check out her books. Has anyone else read any of her books?

I just bought this. I've haven't read it yet, is it good? Has anyone read it?

Zelma I used to have a huge hardcover with that illustration on the front, but never read it. I think I always assumed it would be sad and avoided it. 7y
SqueakyChu I read this book as a chapter book (one chapter a night) to my two sons when they were young. While I was reading it to them, I burst out crying. Yes. It‘s a good book. A very good book. I would say it left the biggest impression on me of any book I ever read to my children many years ago. (edited) 7y

Most Popular Book of 1938: This is less a story about a boy and his pet than a tale about pioneer life. Fighting Mother Nature and wildlife just to survive. It's also a good lesson on why we don't keep wild animals as pets. I actually enjoyed reading about how they went about daily life more than anything. Also, I learned something new: Fawn = 1st year of life. Yearling = 2nd year (photo courtesy of DSDamm Photography) #RoryGilmoreChallenge

In pondering books about #innocence for #augustphotochallenge #day22, I realized that all the books that came to mind had to do with lost innocence... and end up being heartbreaking! Why is that? Perhaps we need the contrast to show the innocence? My choice for today's theme is this beautiful story of a simpler time & place, and a young boy's connection with animals. It's lovely and... yes... heartbreaking.

Because I've always been a huge animal lover, I immediately thought of animal/human friendships, my favorite of which is the one between Jody and Flag, despite its tragic end. The Yearling is a quiet book, but it packs a wallop. #augustphotochallenge #favbookishfriendship
